June goals

So I’m a little late putting these out there but honestly, I don’t plan on accomplishing many things since the kids are home for summer break.

What would you like to accomplish this month?

May Goals Revisited

Not my best month but I’m pleased.

Sort of.

Let’s take a look.

Clean off desk and keep it cleanFail – This was a pipe dream and it never had a chance of being accomplished. Anyone who has ever worked with me before knows I keep a messy desk but somehow manage to know where everything is.

Make Guest Room PillowsFail! Bought material but didn’t get any farther.

Add some Art to my BedroomFail! Thought about art for the guest room but not for mine.

Stick to Grocery BudgetCheck! I think. Is that bad? We only ate out once a week and everyone brought lunches everyday but we did go on 2 trips which meant eating out for every meal for about a total of 7 days.

Buy Environmentally Safe Snack ContainersCheck!

I ordered these snack containers and I’m really excited to start using them. I saw them over at I Heart Organizing and thought I’d give them a try since she raves about them. They are BPA free, freezer friendly, and have a twist top.

Surprise my Kids in some wayCheck! Remember the shrunken heads? Yep, that was surprise, fright, and fascination all rolled into one.

Paint Guest Bathroom WallsCheck! All done.

Paint Wall Touch Ups Around HousePartial check! One day while everyone was at school I walked around the house with our main inside paint color and touched up some spots that needed it. Unfortunately, I only had about 15 minutes to do this so I have more areas of the house to do this in before it’s considered done.

Get Estimate for Plantation Shutters for My RoomFail

Scrapbook 10 pages Check!

Add etsy game / bingo to site Check! I put my Father’s Day printable up on etsy yesterday.

Read a Parenting BookCheck!

As part of a parent ed program, our elementary brought in Marilyn Morris for a discussion on sex education. She wrote the book ABC’s of the Birds and Bees for Parents of Toddlers to Teens. I had actually heard Mrs. Morris speak about 4 years ago and enjoyed listening to her then just as I did a few months ago.

I bought her book and read it as my parenting book for the month. This book is an extremely easy read, broken down into small segments so that it’s easy to put the book down. Reading this book was comforting in a way but hugely worrying in another. I felt like there were some pat on the back moments for me as a parent but there were many more hold your breath moments. Just the facts about teenagers with STD’s are staggering.

This book does have a slant toward promoting abstinence before marriage but whatever your feelings are on that subject, you will get some good information on how to talk to your kids about sex and the potential risks associated with it today.

I also bought the teenager’s workbook that goes along with the adult’s book. I haven’t actually opened it yet but in theory a young teenager would read a few pages from the workbook and then have a discussion with a parent.

Morris is quick to note that discussing sex should not be a one time conversation with your children but an ongoing discussion starting when they are young.

This book was certainly eye opening but it did put me to sleep a few times. That’s okay because I’m sure I will read it several times again over the next couple of years.

Gather Supplies and Run 2 End of the Year PartiesCheck! As you read this I’m probably running back and worth between the 4th grade and Kinder classes trying to run 2 parties – with a 3 year old on my hip. Just a helpful shout out to all those fellow room moms out there – I feel your pain! People, if a room mom asks for your help, HELP THEM!

Fix, Paint, Hang Front Room ShelfFail. The one time I went to work on this I couldn’t. This will hopefully get done sometime soon.

Get Estimate & Order Sun Shades for Our Attic WindowsCheck! Mostly. I got two estimates for the shades, chose someone, and had to wait about 2 weeks for approval from the home owners association. Thankfully I got the green light today and will order them on Monday.

How’d you do this month?

Painting

I’m spending the day finishing up painting our guest bathroom – finally one goal will be complete this month.

We chose Copen Blue from Sherwin Wiliams.

I like it the more that I see it – started a little too bright but since drying has settled down a bit.

Next step in the guest room?

Switching out the builder mirror with a new one…but that’s not until June so I’ve got time to search.

Are you working on anything in your house right now?

April Goals Revisited

Clean out the garageCheck- The only way I accomplished this was to do a little each day. I told myself, just clean this corner, or go through this box. My husband helped me with the final push and after several months we are finally able to get the car in the garage.

Hang fan in Caroline’s roomCheck – thanks Derek!

Make guest room pillows Check and fail – I made 2 envelope pillow using this wonderful video tutorial by Crafty Gemini but I still need to make at least one more pillow.

Try a new recipeCheck, check, check – We tried homemade chicken pot pie, lemon cake, and ….can’t remember the last one…but 3! That’s some sort of record around here.

Shop at the Farmer’s MarketCheck – As a family we went to the local farmer’s market and had a good time. I don’t think we bought what you would typically think about buying but everything ended up being tasty – green peppers, spinach, corn, sourdough bread, lemon bread, toffeee, tamales, sausage, and chicken.

Choose summer camps for the kiddosCheck

Donate box of items to GoodwillCheck

Take online driver’s ed Check

Get estimate for plantation shutters in my roomFail – I contacted someone who came highly recommended but I’ve only heard from him once in two weeks – It’s okay since we had a massive car repair bill so these shutters are on the back burner for awhile. I still would love to have a quote.

Scrapbook 10 pages in Alex’s scrapbookCheck

Order some personalized gifts for upcoming eventsCheck

Scrapbook 10 pages for CarolineFail – I only completed 1 page

Paint headboardCheck  – Here’s a peek

Add etsy game / bingoFail – almost ready

I can’t believe one third of 2012 is already gone!

So did you accomplish what you wanted to in April?

I love you because…

One of  my Januaray goals was to hang the “I love you because” signs which I bought from Kiki Creates when she was having an “oops sale.”

The defect in the prints turned out to be the white rim around them. Eventually I will add a little black border to cover that up, but hey, they went up in January and it’s still not done so don’t hold your breath.

I bought cheap IKEA frames to display them on the wall (I think the frames were $3 for a pair).

the view coming down our stairs – everyone sits on the stairs to put their shoes on so I thought this would be the perfect spot.

Current and previous entries…

“you love to dress up”

“you love to have stories read to you”

“you love your brothers”

“your laugh is contagious”

“you have a passion for animals”

“you have found a love of reading”

“Your smile makes me smile”

“You love to listen to NPR with me”

“You are a wonderful big brother”

The kids immediately notice when a new reason has been posted so it’s fun to listen and watch them discuss it. Which reminds me, I need to go write something new right now.

*Here’s Kiki’s original post which inspired me to put these prints up in our house*

March Goals Revisited

So let’s see how many of my March goals I accomplished:

Paint headboard – Does it count that it’s in the garage ready to be painted? Nope.

Make family subway art for hallway Check! I’ll show it to you soon.

Buy a pair of quality sunglassesCheck and check! Why two? I bought a pair of outrageously expensive ($300) sunglasses (Gucci baby!) but decided I just couldn’t pay that much, so they are sitting on my counter waiting to be returned. I did compromise and buy myself a pair of sunglasses at the $90 range (Michael Kors) and am going to keep those. If this seems like a waste of money, just remember I’ve never bough a pair of sunglasses that was more than $10, plus it was a goal, I had to follow through 🙂

Here’s a picture of the sunglasses I finally settled on. And by the way, they look exactly like the $300 pair and the $10 pair. Apparently as much as I wanted to step out of my little fashion box, I just can’t.

Buy only environmentally friendly cleaning productsCheck! Although these products are typically more expensive I only had to buy three this month and I feel good about buying safer products for our family. I found that all of these products worked well and I plan on buying them again once they are used up. Here are the three that I bought:

Mrs. Meyer’ Liquid Dish Soap

Biokleen Bac-Out Stain & Odor Eliminator (used on clothes)

Seventh Generation Bathroom Cleaner

Make Jeopardy game for etsy Nope, not again.

Learn how to finally take pictures off the camera Check!

Organize Caroline’s room & closet (plus the toys)Check!

Take some kid chosen spring break field tripsCheck!

Date night with hubbyCheck!

Scrapbook 10 pages in Alex’s scrapbookNope! Ugh!

Time sort of got away from me at the end of the month so I plan to carry over the goals I didn’t accomplish to this month.

How you do in accomplishing some goals?

This Weekend

2 soccer games +

1 lacrosse game +

1 BBQ at friends +

1 hair coloring appointment that went wrong (I had thick blond tiger stripes on my head) and required a redo so the appointment took about 3 hours +

1 high energy friend over to play with the boys

= none of mommy’s work getting done.

Must work on something now.

A Birthday Skirt

One of my February goals was to make my daughter a skirt or dress.

I settled on a skirt since that seemed to be an easier project.

Half the coverage, half the work, right?

I followed the instructions from the sewing blog MADE and I think the skirt turned out fairly well for a first try. I didn’t bother making a tutorial because, “about this, and cut about that much,” didn’t seem like real effective directions.

We added the pink leggings since this outfit would have been a bit chilly to wear to recess without them. She is proudly accessorizing with her school birthday crown (and a pterodactyl).

And what did this sweet munchkin tell me immediately after putting on this skirt which I worked on for over an hour and which made me extremely proud to make?

“Thank you Mommy. I love you. Thank you for working so hard on this for me?”

Nope.

It was…

“Now make me a dress please.”

“I’m 1…2….Free!”
