Today was the first day of school for two of our kids

Woke Up, Got Dressed, & Consumed Message Pancakes (a tradition in our house)

Grabbed the improved upon old backpacks and lunchboxes

Pottery Barn for Kids wanted $49.95 for the Batman backpack, I think not!

The whole family walked to school – requested by and granted to our six year old.

Yes, Caroline insisted she had to wear a backpack. She also insisted I put a snack in there.

Once we reached the school, my fourth grader informed me he could get to his class by himself. When I was leaving Andrew, our kindergartener, in his class I said, “Andrew, give me hugs and kisses.” He replied, “Just hugs.” Embarrassed already at 6.

Can’t wait to find out how the first day went!

  1. I cannot believe Alex is in 4th grade!! And by the way, I would have spent the $50 bucks on the pottery barn backpack if I had kids because I don’t have your creativity. Probably my kids will need to just live with Aunt Jennifer- otherwise I will be forever broke or never be able to retire.

    • He also wanted the $22 Batman lunchbox. I bought a $8 one from Walmart and painted the logo on that too.

  2. Oh, they are soooo cute! I miss them so much. They are so lucky to have a mom who created a special summer for them and takes time to realize her children’s desires at a cheaper price….a good lesson for the kids.

  3. You are the cutest mom ever! Love the pancakes…what a fun tradition. Hope everyone had a great first day!

  4. You can surf waves at your mall?! That looks so fun. And the pancakes are awesome. Hope you had a great first day, Guys!

  5. Love the back packs. My kids would be jealous-all they got was cereal. Thanks for linking up your wonderful ideas.

  6. Ahhh, I hope Andrew enjoyed his first day of school with Alex!! Can’t wait to hear about it!

  7. Too cute! I love that you have several back to school traditions! My favorite part was always labeling EVERYTHING – every pencil crayon & marker… yeah, I’m cool like that. 😛

  8. Fun! Smart idea using a condiment bottle for the message pancakes! My mom did that sometimes (well, made shapes/letters, but not with a bottle). She’d do hers as a mirror image and after it’d been cooked a bit, she’d pour a circular pancake over it. The message would be darker against the background. My kids love it, too.

  9. We love message pancakes too! So cute! And your backpacks turned out great! Thank you so much for linking up at Savvy HomeMade Monday! We are partying again now and I hope to see you again soon! 🙂

  10. What a fun post! I love that batman backpack! I would love it if you would share this and/or any other projects you have been up to at Tuesday Talent Show at Chef In Training Tomorrow! Plus there is going to be a fun giveaway too! Thanks so much and I hope to see you there!

  11. Oh my goodness, I love that Batman backpack!!

That is an awesome pancake tradition. Your kids will some added color in there! I’m just glad my daughter isn’t old enough to have an opinion yet which means I can do what I want and get better at it before she asks for something difficult!

  12. What a fun mom! I’m excited to be able to do things like this with my (future) kids someday! Like summer lists and fun pancakes! Well done and the backpack by the way!! Thanks for sharing this on Fancy This Fridays!!!

  13. You are an awesome mom! I LOVE the Batman backpack- I saw those at Pottery Barn and they are SO expensive! Yours looks great! Thanks so much for linking up to Strut Your Stuff last weekend! We would LOVE to have you come back and link up more of your great projects tomorrow!
